This postal stationery was addressed by a Harbin trader to the New York Stamp C°. The commemorative cancellation is that used between 1 and 3 March. As this card was not sent at the time, the sender added a 6 fen stamp to the postage so that the total would correspond to the rate in force at the time.
The year was 1938 and mail to the United States was still routed via Japan to reduce transit times.
The correspondence went like this:
"Dear Sir,
I am sending you stamps to the value of $6.50 for my order of two 1939 Scott catalogues, but to date I have received nothing.
To date, I would like only one catalogue with the monthly appendices. I thank you for accepting the total value of these books of $6.50 and I ask you to send me stamps from your country on the remainder of this sum.... "
